2009 Balsam Fir Harvest:
Once again our Founder and President, Gary Young, was on the front lines to ensure Young Living essential oils are the purest and most potent available—he recently wrapped up a successful balsam fir harvest in northern Idaho!
There he employed the help of many Young Living employees and distributors, and his commitment to the Young Living Therapeutic Grade™ standard was evident as he oversaw every step of the harvest. We've created a short video for you to enjoy that highlights some of the action:
Those who participated in this rare opportunity commented on the importance of Gary's hands-on involvement in the oil-sourcing process. General Manager of the Americas, Mike McLean, was thrilled to be a part of the hard work and dedication that Gary demands for his oils:
"Gary made sure that everyone got to be personally involved in each step of the harvesting process," says Mike. "From cutting trees to loading trucks, we all got to experience everything that goes into a batch of balsam fir oil."
Most important to Mike was the positive teamwork that surrounded the event: "It was amazing to feel the spirit of teamwork as distributors, corporate employees, and farm employees worked long hours in cold, tough conditions, never once complaining or losing steam."
The harvest took place on Young Living's Balsam Farm in northern Idaho, just a few miles south of the Canadian border. Sustainable growing practices are of utmost importance to Gary, and he resolves that nature be left in better shape than when the harvest began. That's why he insists on replanting the harvested area with optimal spacing between trees to protect against forest fires and ground erosion.
The fir tree—commonly known as the Christmas tree—is renowned for its benefits to the respiratory system, as well as its ability to soothe over-worked muscles and joints. The balsam fir essential oil recently harvested is exclusive to Young Living and contains optimal levels of four important constituents: alpha pineane, beta pineane, camphene, and limonene, which give it many of its soothing characteristics.

Ocotea Essential Oil (Ocotea quixos) ~ Young Living's newest therapeutic grade essential oil is extracted from the stem and leaves of the ocotea tree in Ecuador and is related to the cinnamon species. This essential oil has an aroma that is different from any common cinnamon. Ocotea has the highest level of alpha humulene of any essential oil and also has natural cleansing and purifying properties.
Ocotea is wild crafted and distilled at Finca Botánica Aromática, Young Living's farm and distillery in Ecuador. Ocotea is harvested from a large tree found in the Amazon Basic of Ecuador, from sea level up to 1,500 meters in altitude. The trees are divided into male and female trees, with only the female trees producing foliage suitable for distillation into essential oils. Historical usage of ocotea dates back more than 500 years, when it was used to aromatize sweets and cakes.
Though there are hints of a cinnamon base, ocotea is different from traditional cinnamon. Ocotea has high levels of alpha humulene — one of the highest of any known essential oil. Alpha humulene can balance the body's internal response to irritation. Only copaiba essential oil has comparable levels of this natural plant compound.

Ocotea has a relatively low concentration of cinnamaldehyde (less than 5 percent), which is a natural plant chemical that can trigger sensitization reactions. Traditional cinnamon can contain up to 50 percent cinnamaldehyde.
Every two years the ocotea tree produces large flowers known as "ishpingo" or "flor de canela." Look for Ishpingo essential oil in a couple of years!
How to use: Diffuse or inhale directly for aromatherapy, dilute with carrier oil and apply topically, or take internally as a dietary supplement. Topical Use - dilute 1-4 drops with V-6™ Enhanced Vegetable Oil Complex or olive oil. Test on a small, inconspicuous area of skin to observe sensitivity; apply to deisred area as needed. Rue is one of the ingredients used in the Vinegar of the Four Thieves. The Four Thieves were a family of perfumers who robbed the dead during the Black Plague and were protected by a natural remedy that included rue.

Frequently Asked Questions: Q: Is Ruta graveolens essential oil safe? A: Yes; RutaVaLa (rue) essential oil is a very different chemical composition than the Ruta graveolens herb itself. The herb or water extracts from the herb can have negative effects at very high dosages. RutaVaLa oil is composed primarily of ingredients that are generally recognized as safe (GRAS) according to the FDA. Q: Should RutaVaLa be used topically? A: RutaVaLa oil contains a photosensitizing compound. Avoid direct sunlight or UV rays up to twelve hours after applying the product. Q: Why do RutaVaLa 5 ml and RutaVaLa Roll-On smell different?
