Touch is a primal need, as vital as food, clothing and shelter. In the 13th century, the German emperor Frederick II conducted research on children to find out what language they would speak if raised without hearing any words. The newborns were taken from their parents and were raised by nurses who fed the infants but were forbidden to cuddle or talk to them. The babies never learned a language they all died before they could talk! What Frederick had discovered was that physical stimulation can be a matter of life and death. Touch is our most important and intimate form of communication.
The first written records of massage (derived from the Arabic word meaning stroke) date back 3,000 years to China. A bas-relief on the tomb of Ankh-mahor, a c.2200 B.C. Egyptian priest, depicts a seated man receiving a vigorous foot rub. Hippocrates, the Greek physician known as the father of modern medicine, was a 4th century B.C. proselytizer for massage. Today, some 25 million Americans make 60 million visits to over 85,000 pracitioners each year. Massage is being used to boost athletic performance, reduce agitation in Alzheimer's patients and relieve stress at disaster sites.
At the Touch Research Institute in Miami, research studies have shown massage to have positive effects on conditions from colic to hyperactivity to diabetes to migraines, boosts immune function in HIV-positive patients, improves autistic children's ability to concentrate, lowers anxiety in depressed adolescents and everything researched to date.
When we say that someone touches us emotionally, it means we have been touched to the core of our being. There are millions of touch receptors in our skin that send messages along the spinal cord to the brain which sends messages to the rest of the body. A loving touch can reduce the heart rate and lower blood pressure, which has even been shown to improve the heart rates of people in deep comas.
The use of Aromatherapy has also been used for centuries, going back to the Egyptians, for a variety of reasons and benefits. Aromatherapy means to treat with aroma through inhalation, providing many health benefits unique to essential oils. Because essential oils are soluble with the lipid membranes of cell walls, they have an unmathced ability to penetrate cells and disperse wtihin minutes throughout the body when applied topically. Essential oils increase the body's ability to transport oxygen and nutrients into the cells which is vital to cellular and therefore, physical health. Essential oils can make chemicals nontoxic by fracturing their molecular structure working as natural chelators, bonding to metallics and chemicals enabling the body to eliminate them.
An Aromatherapy Massage offers many benefits! When you arrive, you will be able to choose from a wide variety of essential oils according to your individual needs:
