November 1997 D. Gary Young, N.D., President Young Living Essential Oils
"I have raised animals all my life and presently have several miniature horses as well as four teams of draft horses. I also have pygmy goats, Barbadoes sheep and llamas at my ranch where I reside. On my 1300 acre herb farm at Whispering Springs in Mona, Utah, I have an animal petting zoo with Bactrian camels, zeeboos from Africa (miniature Bramas), Watusi cows and bulls, Walleroos (miniature kangaroos), llamas, buffalo, miniature donkeys, as well as horses and goats. As you can see, we have a wide variety of animals.
We have used the oils extensively on many of the animals and are continually making discoveries. The animals respond extremely well and we feel they have benefited greatly.
In my experience, I have found that animals respond to essential oils much the same as humans. Animals are not as sensitive to the phenol and sesquiterpene constituents so they can be applied "neet" or full strength. One needs only to determine which oils are applicable to the situation and then apply a few drops 3-4 times daily.
The amount for small animals like cats and dogs is like the application for a child: 3-4 drops each time applied. For larger animals like large dogs apply 6-7 drops. For horses, apply 15-20 drops.
After applying the oils, I have found it beneficial to cover the open wound with Gentle Care Rose Ointment, which keeps the skin soft and helps promote the healing.
I have applied the oils in the following ways:
1. Apply on their paws where the absorption is very fast.
2. On cloven hoof animals apply on the auricular points of the ears and/or spine or both.
3. Underneath the top lip on the gums and on the tongue.
4. Sprinkle a few drops on the spine and then massage into skin, just like with humans.
For various problems I have experimented with the following oils:
Strangle in horses, I used a combination of the oil blends Exodus 11 and Melrose together. (4 parts Exodus II to 1 part Melrose)
Mineral deficiencies - Mineral Essence™ (liquid tincture taken internally) may help meet the animal's needs and when met, they quit chewing on the furniture and other undesirable things.
Tissue repair and healing directly on wound - Melrose™.
May help with pain and stop bleeding - Helichrysum.
Healing of wounds and abrasions - Gentle Care Rose Ointment."
Nine powerful Therapeutic Grade Essential Oils are dropped like "little raindrops" and massaged into the spine relieving muscular tension in the body. This procedure originates from an ancient Lakota Indian Healing Technique adapted by D. Gary Young of Young Living Essential Oils. The Essential Oils enhance the systems of the body and deeply energizes and detoxifies the body as well as balances the electrical body. The therapeutic grade essential oils used support the immune and nervous system and are designed specifically for topical application. Raindrop Technique® was developed as a result of research indicating that many forms of spinal misalignments are caused by muscle spasms due to bacteria and viruses originating in the spine and the tissues along the spine. Very effective if your horse has been vaccinated and/or has toxins within the body.

Dr. Mack is a holistic veterinarian who has been specializing in performance horses for ten years. She competes in the jumper division and is available at most of the major west coast shows, including Spruce Meadows, to treat horses. It is her strong desire to create a holistic wellness and training center in Southern California where horses can come for a week or for months to recover from injuries, or just to have preventative holistic treatment while they stay in work, so they don't lose condition. She was one of the first women to graduate from Columbia University, and received her veterinary degree from the University of Pennsylvania. She has dedicated her life to the conscious practice of holistic medicine on animals with her primary focus on sport horse medicine.
Equine Raindrop Therapy is a simple and powerful treatment for the horse. It can enhance the immune system, help alleviate pain along the spine, and generally invigorates the horse. This video offers a clear and concise explanation that empowers most horse owners to perform raindrop therapy. It also provides an introduction and understanding of essential oils and how they can be used therapeutically.
From The Equine Journal, Fall Issue #37:
"Seven years ago, I watched a Native American medicine man perform a "Spinal Alignment" on a fellow holistic veterinarian in Minnesota. He used herbs, essential oils and hot water on the spine. Four years later, I got the opportunity to work closely with a Lakota Sioux medicine woman in Idaho, who did a similar healing on a woman with MS. I attended a doctors' conference in Scottsdale, Arizona in March of '99 and observed a woman receive raindrop therapy from Dr. Gary Young, a naturopath and leading authority in the science of essential oils. The patient was in her early fifties, had severe scoliosis and spinal pain. After this raindrop treatment, she grew over one inch, her deviation lessened over 50%, and she was pain free.
It seemed to me that the universe was guiding me to utilize such a treatment in my own practice. The very next morning, I woke up with a clear vision of how much this treatment would help horses and their riders. Since then I have developed a technique for animals, especially horses, and produced a video that explains clearly how to do the technique yourself.
This revolutionary therapy is easy to do for your horse. It is beneficial for the person applying the oils and for any animal close enough to smell the oils, as the scent triggers a response within the hypothalamus almost immediately. It is not a cure-all, but it is a wonderful way to keep horses healthy and comfortable in their bodies. It is also a powerful addition to antibiotics when fighting an infection because it assists in strengthening the immune system. It pulls viruses and toxins out of the system and balances the structural and electrical alignment of the horse."

Essential Oils - Only the Best for Your Pet
Any pet owner knows that our furry friends are more than just pets. They truly are part of the family.
We're willing to do anything for them - especially when it comes to health care. But more and more pet owners are becoming dissatisfied with conventional therapies. As a result, there has been a growing interest in alternative treatments. To cater to this clientele, veterinarians are turning to Young Living.
One such veterinarian is Dr. Mary Hess of Madison, Wisconsin. According to Dr. Hess, "I think more veterinarians are getting into alternative care because clients are demanding it. In order to have a more complete veterinary practice, veterinarians are exploring other avenues to satisfy those people."
Monica Goldberg and her fourteen-year-old yellow lab, Oats, called on Dr. Hess when it was discovered that Oats had five tumors, one of which was cancerous. The tumors were surgically removed and Oats was sent home bandaged at the midriff. Conventional painkillers weren't providing relief. In fact, Oats was so uncomfortable she couldn't even lie down to rest. Monica applied a specially formulated oil blend that Dr. Hess provided to help relieve Oats' discomfort. According to Monica, "In a matter of minutes, I turned away from Oats and when I glanced back she was lying down asleep."
After the surgery, Monica treated Oats' incisions with essential oils and Animal Scents Ointment, which helped seal in the oil. To her surprise, Oats' suffering was minimized and her recovery was quick.
According to Dr. Hess, essential oils can be used on animals just as they would on humans. However, she recommends following a veterinarian's care in diagnosing specific conditions.
Because many veterinarians have yet to incorporate all-natural products into their practice, Dr. Hess willingly consults with other doctors to help them guide clients in the use of essential oils on pets. There are critics who frown upon using essential oils on pets because of their fragile senses. But Dr. Hess stresses that essential oils can be diluted with Young Living's V-6 Enhanced Vegetable Oil complex until a tolerance is established. She says, "Like humans, you might notice a reaction to the oils, but once your body has been cleansed then your body tolerates them quite well. This is the same for animals."
That does not mean that there are no potential hazards when using all-natural products. Dr. Hess warns, "Many of the Young Living nutritional products can be used in animals and do have oils that are of value. However, the use of products with xylitol, a sweetener, must be avoided in animals. Unlike humans, in which it is safe, animals have an adverse reaction that includes low blood sugar and liver toxicity. The pet owner must carefully look at the label or call Young Living if there is concern about whether a product includes xylitol."
Our pets mean everything to us. Why not give them the best? Dr. Mary Hess recommends that every pet owner carry an essential oil emergency kit for pets. Based on her experience as a veterinarian, Dr. Hess suggests these ten Young Living essential oil blends to keep pets feeling their best:
Thieves® - Perfect for attending to minor skin issues, Thieves is also utilized for addressing dental concerns. This blend is safe for kittens and puppies.
Melrose™ - When used in conjunction with R.C. and Raven, Melrose provides respiratory support. It can also be used on minor skin issues if Thieves cannot be tolerated.
Di-Gize™ - The gastrointestinal system responds well to this blend. Nutmeg and ginger can be added for additional support.
Peace & Calming® - If stress, fear, anxiety or other similar conditions are present, Peace & Calming can be used to calm a pet. If the pet is injured, Peace & Calming can relax the animal enough to administer other treatments. This blend can also be used on cats who are resistant to other forms of treatment, for urinary problems or excessive grooming results from stress.
Purification® - This blend is useful for external parasites such as fleas, ticks, and mosquitoes.
Relieve It™ - Especially beneficial for relieving discomfort, Relieve It can be alternated with PanAway for a wider spectrum of relief.
Raven™ - Also utilized for respiratory and urinary tract support, Raven is more powerful than R.C. and features essential oils not found in the latter. Combined, the two oils are highly effective.
M-Grain™ - Provides relief from head discomfort resulting from sinus pressure.
R.C.™ - Ideal for respiratory and urinary tract support, R.C. is practical for cats that require bladder fortification, which does not respond to conventional therapy. (It can be paired with Raven for added support.)
PanAway® - With osteoarthritis common in older pets, PanAway is valuable for relieving discomfort and relaxing the muscles, ligaments, and tendons. This oil blend can be used alone or in addition to other essential oils that aid in general discomfort. Using a moist towel over the area increases the effectiveness of the oils.
